Dear families,

This holiday season, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School and the entire community of Newtown, CT. Like you, we were deeply saddened by this terrible crime, especially as it occurred during what should have been a peaceful and holy season for so many of our families. Parents throughout the nation continue to grapple with how to help our children feel safe, secure and protected in the aftermath of such violence.

Our staff is aware that many of you and your adopted children have been impacted by childhood trauma. Sometimes high profile tragedies such as Newtown can trigger memories of personal trauma. It is important to listen to our children and affirm their feelings, and try to keep their lives as predictable as possible. We must assure our children that we will take care of them and keep them safe.

At the same time, we should remember that our children’s ability to comprehend the complexities of this tragedy will depend on their age and maturity. We can protect younger children from further trauma by turning off the TV, and we can help children of all ages by being available to them when they want to talk.

Adoption Associates is here to support your family during this difficult time. We are available by phone for guidance and we can offer a list of resources to read and help.

On behalf of Deb, Sandy, Toby, Maren, Lisa and Julie, we wish you all a safe and peaceful new year.

Warm Regards,
Adoption Associates
